The Superman Diamond Anniversary celebration rolls on in Cleveland with a daylong series of events on Saturday, including unique commemorative Superman coins.

The Superman-themed fundraiser to benefit the three women who were held captive on Seymour Avenue and escaped in May.

Carol and John’s Comic Shop, in Kamm’s Corner at 17462 Lorain Ave. on Cleveland’s West Side, honors the Man of Steel’s 75th anniversary of his 1938 first appearance in “Action Comics” No. 1 by doing something truly heroic: raising money to help people in need.

“There will be an art show, exclusive giveaways, an artists reception, and of course, comic books,” said co-owner John Dudas. “Artwork will be raffled off and all proceeds will go to the Courage Fund, to help those three girls from Seymour Avenue.”

The big prize on Saturday will be specially minted, commemorative Superman coins depicting Superman with the map coordinates of Glenville, where Superman was created. The coins are about the size of a silver dollar.

The 300 coins will be distributed supplies last to anyone who comes up in a Superman costume. That does not mean just a Superman T-shirt.

Anyone who buys at least $25 worth of raffle tickets for the original artwork that will be awarded during the day also gets a coin. The money raised in the raffle will go the Cleveland Courage Fund to help the women from Seymour Avenue.

“We have gotten a lot of cool things together working with a lot of cool people around Cleveland to give Superman the 75th Anniversary party he deserves right here in his hometown,” Dudas said.

The Superman celebration will go from from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and also will spotlight Superman comic book covers as imagined by some of Cleveland’s finest artists. Of course, they feature Superman in the city where he was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

There will be other all-ages (focusing on kids) events from noon to 2 p.m. where children will be able to color eight Superman pages created by local artists. The pages show Superman and friends, including Beppo the Supermonkey, Streaky the Supercat, Comet the Superhorse and Krypto, the Superdog at the West Side Market and other local points of interest.

The day ends winds up with an artists’ reception from 7-9 p.m.

“All day long you’ll be able to stop by the shop and see custom Action Comics covers featuring local artists giving their take on Superman in Cleveland,” said Dudas.

The 35 covers will be raffled off individually. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and. All money will go to the Cleveland Courage Fund to help the women from Seymour Avenue. Anyone who buys more than $25 worth of tickets will also get the special, commemorative coin. http://clevelandcourage.org/
