One of rarest ever Superman comics goes up for sale in Shirley

The comic was custom-made in 1988

One of the rarest Superman comics ever printed is to go up for auction in Croydon.

Daniel Bradman fulfilled the dream of many a teenage boy when the 13-year-old played a starring role alongside his hero in a special edition commissioned by his millionaire dad.

Property tycoon Godfrey Bradman paid the DC Comics team £10,000 to produce The Island Bradman, the most specialised Superman edition ever made, for his son’s birthday and Bar Mitzvah in 1988.

Just 200 copies of the comic, written by David Levin, drawn by Curt Swan and inked by Angelo Torres, are thought to have been made and given to friends and family.

One of them is now being sold by a former employee of Mr Bradman and will go under the hammer at The Chateau in Shirley Hills on November 20.

The auction will be held by Catherine Southon Auctioneers and Valuers.

Catherine Southon, a regular on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, said the comic was important to collectors around the world.

She said: “It is always particularly exciting when you see something at a valuation day and you can immediately tell how special it was when it was created and how valuable it is now.”

The auction, at 11.30am, will also contain a collection of fans owned by leading soprano Ava June, who died earlier this year, alongside a modern print collection, ceramics, artworks, jewellery and silver.
