Learn more about Superman at History Club

The Rowan History Club will meet Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. The program will feature Concord native Michael Eury, an internationally known historian of comics and pop culture and author of numerous books on those topics, including “The Krypton Companion,” “The Batcave Companion” and “The Supervillain Book.” Since 2003 he has been the editor of Back Issue, a comics-history magazine.

Eury has worked as a writer or editor for DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Nike, Toys R Us, The Microsoft Network, Marvel Comics and Warner Bros. His resume includes articles about hearing loss, cartoons about income tax, a pilot episode for an animated series starring a famous athlete as a superhero, and comic books featuring Superman, Batman, Looney Tunes, Godzilla and the Mask.

Regionally, Eury is known as a historian of Concord and Cabarrus County. He has recently published his second book on his hometown’s history, “Legendary Locals of Concord,” from Arcadia Publishing.

He is the former executive director of Historic Cabarrus Association and the Concord Museum, and today is a member of Historic Cabarrus’ board of directors. He also serves on the boards of the Concord Friends of the Library and the Hearing Loss Association of North Carolina. In August 2013, he was appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory to serve on the North Carolina Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

For the History Club, Eury will be present “Superman: An American Icon at 75,” an exploration of the Man of Steel’s progression from Depression-era tough guy to modern-day superstar.

The meeting will be held in the Messinger Room, accessible by elevator. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, September through June. The museum is at 202 N. Main St. Guests to the program should enter through the rear entrance.

A roundtable format will allow for a 30 to 45 minute presentation, followed by a question and answer period. The Rowan History Club is open to all persons interested in the history of Rowan County. There are no dues or admission fees, and refreshments are served. For more information, contact the Rowan Museum at 704-633-5946 or email rowanmuseum@fibrant.com .
