KGBeast To Appear In ‘Batman V Superman,’ Maybe Be The Best Thing In It

Ten Nights of the Beast, DC Comics

I’ve already checked out of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 18 months in advance, so every announcement about the upcoming Zack Snyder film and its attendant roster of spinoffs and franchises has been idle curiosity. Until, that is, it was announced that the KGBeast would be making an appearance.

As longtime CA readers may recall, the Beast is one of my all-time favorite villains. Originally created by the team of Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo in a four-part story called “Ten Nights of the Beast” that ran in Batman #417 – 420, the KGBeast was an assassin for hire who battled Batman in one of the most over-the-top stories of all time. And while I can hardly believe I’m saying this, he’s kind of the perfect villain for David S. Goyer and Zack Snyder’s version of the cinematic DC Universe.

That story was, after all, the comic book equivalent of an ’80s action movie, and the Beast was the embodiment of over-the-top Cold War fears. He’s Ivan Drago meets Bennett from Commando, an unstoppable force that racks up a body count in the triple digits over the course of four issues and chops off his own hand with a fire axe rather than be brought in by Batman — and he’s even written as a villain so unstoppable that Batman just basically locks him up in a sewer and leaves him for dead rather than attempting to bring him in, leaving a later creative team to come in and retcon it so that Batman got around to calling the cops eventually.

In other words, he fits in pretty well with the Goyer/Snyder universe of neck-snapping Superman and Sad Charlie Brown Batman.

Of course, I also suspect that his role in the landmark court case Batman v Superman will likely be overshadowed by the other four hundred characters being crowbarred in to that film, serving mainly to set up the upcoming Suicide Squad film by making sure there are enough villains left over that haven’t been murdered by the protagonists.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be ruining everything in theaters in summer of 2016.
