Today’s Action Comics #50 saw a big change for Superman in what will be the last issue of the series by Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder.
Warning: this article contains spoilers for Action Comics #50!
Superman lost his powers months ago at the start of the “Truth” arc, but recently he realized that if he over-exposed himself to Kryptonite then it would give him a temporary set of different powers. His ultimate plan was for the Kryptonite to burn away his damaged cells that were causing him to not be able to use his original powers, not unlike chemotherapy.
Vandal Savage is the one behind de-powering Superman, all in a plot to harness the full power of the meteor that originally granted him his immortality, which is currently passing by the Earth as the story unfolds.
In this issue, Savage loaded his children up in a shuttle and sent them into space. The children believed that they were being gifted extra power from their father, but really Savage was just using them as guinea pigs to see if it would work before doing it himself. And the Worst Dad of the Year Award goes to…
Superman latched onto the hull as it blasted off, but Savage grabbed him and shot him point-blank in the chest with a poisonous bullet.
Conveniently for Superman, Savage had rigged up the Fortress of Solitude to his ship and brought it to the battlefield (yes, the entire towering crystal structure), so Superman fell down inside it, seemingly about to die…
…only for his powers to suddenly return at the last second. With the damaged cells now gone, the Fortress recognized his DNA once more and his Superman suit reactivated, giving us a grand image of a fully restored Superman flying back up to take on Savage.
The next part of the story will be in Superman/Wonder Woman #27, and then it will conclude in Superman #50.
